Burn cases are some of the most painful injuries and types of injury cases that a lawyer can ever represent someone on. I had a conductor who was on a train in Montana and two trains, unfortunately, collided. This crew saw the train coming and they jumped and they survived but, in the collision, a big fireball occurs and my client got seriously burned. He was flown to Salt Lake City to their burn unit for months. And every day they would scrape all the skin off of him and even through the strongest drugs there were he would scream and scream and scream.
We got ready to try his case and we went to court. And as we’re picking a jury, I asked some of the jurors is there anyone that has any problems with the concept of pain and suffering? And one lady puts up her hand and she goes, “Yeah.” And I go, “Do you understand what this poor gentleman’s been through?” And she goes, “Yeah, but I think that’s all God’s will.” Well, we struck her from the jury and we ended up doing very, very well. But it just shows that a lawyer has to not only know how to put the case together, they have to understand the medical, they have to understand the physical, mental, emotional pain and suffering that a family’s going through. And then be able to convince a jury to understand that also. That’s our job and I’m happy with that case also.
