yes uh absolutely uh I have
handled a number of cases against
several different
manufacturers the industry standard is
that you must not be able to open a
pressure cooker lid when the contents
are pressurized there’s an Underwriters
Laboratory standard that says pressure
cookers must not be able to be opened
they have to have a safety interlock if
they are still under pressure If a
company
is Distributing a pressure cooker that
is able to be opened while it is still
under pressure it is in violation of the
industry standard you must not be able
to do that but there’s a second problem
with some of these pressure cookers
particularly with the Sunbeam
crockpot people have mistakenly put the
lid on 180 degrees opposite of what it’s
supposed to be there’s a place where
you’re supposed to put the lid on and
twist it to lock it if somebody
mistakenly puts that lid on completely
opposite of what it should be 180 Dees
opposite by Design the product should
not pressurize it should recognize that
the lid is not properly placed and not
heat it up to
pressurize however at least with the
Sunbeam that I myself tested I could put
it on 180° opposite of what it should be
and the pot would turn on and heat up as
if it was in the right place the risk of
that happening is because the lid is not
on properly it can blow off uh it can
continue to heat uh I’ve seen a video
where the lid was you
vibrating uh and I had a client where
the lid actually blew off we have it on
video he was walking into the kitchen
because he heard his pot making noise
and boom the lid blew off just as he was
walking up to
it

Denver, CO personal injury attorney George McLaughlin talks about who you can sue for injuries caused by a pressure cooker. Certainly, the attorney has a history of handling cases against various manufacturers, specifically addressing concerns related to pressure cookers. Emphasizing the industry standard, it is asserted that a pressure cooker lid should remain unopenable when the contents are pressurized. This standard is reinforced by the Underwriters Laboratory, which mandates the inclusion of a safety interlock preventing lid opening under pressure. Any distribution of pressure cookers that can be opened while pressurized is considered a violation of this industry standard.

A notable issue, especially with Sunbeam Crock-Pot pressure cookers, revolves around the correct placement of the lid. If individuals mistakenly position the lid 180 degrees opposite from its intended orientation, the product, designed to recognize this misplacement, should not pressurize. However, instances have been encountered, particularly with the Sunbeam model, where placing the lid incorrectly still led to the pot heating up and pressurizing. This introduces a significant risk as the improperly positioned lid can potentially blow off, creating hazardous situations.

The attorney personally conducted tests, confirming that placing the Sunbeam lid 180° opposite from the correct position allows the pot to heat up and pressurize. This identified flaw has the potential to lead to dangerous situations, where the lid might blow off or cause the pot to continue heating. The attorney has even witnessed a video where the lid vibrated, and in one case, a client experienced the lid blowing off—an incident captured on video as the client approached the pot after hearing unusual noises from the kitchen.
