Why does segmenting a portfolio in a dashboard help you understand the portfolio better? Most portfolios are not universal in what they cover. Many things that that portfolio covers may be a segment of this, a slice of that. You may have a bunch of inventors, who, in the medical device side may be covering pacemakers, and in the same division – or in a different division you may have some group covering ablation.

One of the things that segmenting your portfolio by type of technology or by class helps you understand is that really, holistically, what does that slice cover, and not how it covers the company as a whole, but how does it cover that product line. So I always like to see product slices within a portfolio analysis and the dashboard is what makes this very, very easy.
