If you don’t patent your invention the risk that you run is that somebody else would go out an independently arrive at the invention and patent it and exclude from practicing your invention. And that’s actually, if you think about it that’s the thing that patents really offer that’s valuable, which is different than copyright in the sense that or trade secrets where those different forms of protection don’t protect against somebody actually independently arriving at an invention. That’s the distinction. With a patent, you’re excluding others from practicing the invention regardless of whether they stole it from you or whether they independently arrived at it.
