The number one thing to focus on in vehicular homicide cases is the mandatory minimums in Pennsylvania. In state court in Pennsylvania, the mandatory minimums are egregious. So, what you are attempting to do is get below the mandatory minimum amount, and many times in vehicular homicide cases the client has no prior record. So, you’re dealing with someone who’s never been incarcerated before. They’ve never been arrested before for anything, and so we’re dealing with a situation with this mandatory minimum that might not seem that big an amount of time in jail compared to other cases. But, for my clients, it’s a huge amount of time. And so, we have to try to understand right away what that number is, figure out what the mandatory minimum is and see what we can do to sort of hammer that down and make sure that that’s not going to apply to this case.
