Denver, CO personal injury attorney George McLaughlin talks about recalls for Onewheel Skateboards. On November 16, 2022, a commissioner of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a publicly available press release, titled “Future Motion Refuses to Recall Deadly Onewheel Skateboard.” The release strongly advised users to cease the use of all Onewheel electric skateboards, emphasizing the imminent risk of injury or death. The CPSC highlighted that these self-balancing electric skateboards could eject riders, leading to serious injuries and, tragically, at least four reported deaths from traumatic head injuries.
Despite the CPSC’s explicit warning, Future Motion, the company responsible for Onewheel, declined to recall the product, demonstrating a reluctance to address a hazardous situation that had resulted in fatalities. Responding to this, the CPSC took decisive action, issuing a stern warning against the purchase or use of the product. The attorney characterized this warning as one of the strongest and most damning statements he had encountered throughout his years of practice.
Subsequently, on September 29, 2023, the company initiated a recall for all Onewheel skateboards. The CPSC detailed the recall, titled “Future Motion Recalls Onewheel Self-Balancing Electric Skateboards Due to Crash Hazard – Four Deaths Reported,” on its website. The recall encompassed all models of Onewheel electric skateboards, citing the potential for the skateboards to cease balancing the rider if the board’s limits were exceeded, posing a crash hazard leading to serious injury or death. The remedy offered was either a refund or repair.
While the company continued its operations, the recall affected 300,000 units that had been sold. Users were advised to discontinue the use of the skateboards and return them to the company for a refund or repair. Individuals who suffered injuries due to these issues were encouraged to consider pursuing legal action.
