There are many different varieties of murder. There is intentional first-degree murder. There is intentional second-degree murder where you don’t think about it. There is something called depraved heart murder, which is second degree murder where it’s not even intentional but you’ve exhibited some extreme disregard for human life. Then manslaughter is several varieties. Manslaughter can be first degree murder mitigated down to manslaughter because of extreme intoxication or because of some hot-blooded response.

Or there could be involuntary manslaughter where it is a step down from the depraved heart murder that we talked about earlier where there is also some disregard for human life by some extremely negligent action. For instance, a drag race between two cars on a normal city street where the speed limit is let’s say 40 miles an hour and two cars are going down the street 75 miles an hour and a pedestrian gets killed that would be a classic example of some form of involuntary manslaughter.

Wheaton, MD criminal defense lawyer Andrew Jezic explains the difference between murder and manslaughter and the various types thereof.
