So I became a lawyer because I wanted to help people in a direct way. And I love language and writing, and then I’m really curious about people and their lives. And so I wanted to combine all that in a way where I could advocate for people and get them to, you know, a just result. And finding immigration and immigration law just really combined all of that together. So I’m very fortunate to come in and really believe in the work that I’m doing.

So one piece of advice that we are constantly encouraging our clients to do is tell us in advance, and this comes up in a lot of contexts. One of them is international travel. You know, there is a lot that we need to look at when and for a national employee is going to be leaving the US, and so while we can certainly do it last minute on the fly, it’s really the best if they can give us a heads up so we can go into their immigration file and look. Do they have a valid visa stamp to get back in? You know, do they have a pending matter that could complicate things? And so on.

Another area where we want some advanced notice is changes to their job. You know, maybe a work site location change, or a change in title, job duties. All of that can really impact their H1B, or whatever they’re not immigrant status, or their permanent residence process. Having us on the radar to give us a heads up is, really enables us to give the best advice that we can.

San Francisco, CA immigration attorney Katy Lopez shares why she became a lawyer and her most common advice to clients.
