Well, the most rewarding aspect of my practice as a family lawyer is truly in helping people. I had a calling to this area because I really enjoy helping people. I enjoy helping my clients come up with creative solutions to unique problems that they’re experiencing. There is no perfect solution to any problem but in brainstorming different solutions and different ideas and helping them reach a resolution that they can really feel good about when the case is over, I mean that’s what it’s all about for me.
The one piece of advice that I find giving to my family law clients who are going through a custody situation, for example, is to remember that when the case is over and I’m no longer part of their day to day, they still have to deal with the other parent. Those children are going to be in their lives forever, which means by virtue of that the other parent is going to be in their lives forever. And so, at the end of the case I really want my clients to remember that fostering a good coparenting relationship when possible, with the other parent for long term positive interaction is the very most important thing. And they can do that while also protecting their own best interest and the best interest of the children. But, in my opinion, there’s no sense in fighting just for the sake of fighting if you’re not fighting for something that’s truly in the best interest of that particular client or the children that are involved in that case.
One of the most oft repeated pieces of advice I have for clients that are going through a property divorce, for example where children are not involved is to remember too that my can be earned at the end of the day. The respect that they have for themselves through the process is what’s going to be lasting when all is said and done. And it’s very important for each and every client to weigh the true cost benefit analysis of every single step we take in the case to determine if it’s really advancing their goals or not. And if it’s not advancing their goals to help them come up with a better solution to reach the end point that they want to be at when the case is done.
