i have served
00:05
on several boards uh one of them being
00:09
a 501c organization that i actually
00:13
am a co-founder of called women of law
00:15
the purpose of that organization
00:17
is to promote and encourage women
00:20
lawyers
00:21
in the legal field whether they be law
00:23
students
00:24
current lawyers or aspiring lawyers and
00:27
the emphasis there is also on uh black
00:30
and
00:30
minority women in the legal community so
00:34
i’ve co-founded that i’ve sat as a
00:36
director on a board for the houston
00:38
young lawyers association
00:40
and i just recently joined the austin
00:42
bar association
00:43
and i am the incoming president of the
00:47
young professional
00:48
board for covenant house texas which is
00:52
a 501 organization that helps support
00:56
and provide necessities for homeless
00:59
youth
01:00
in the community so i’ve been a part of
01:03
both
01:03
in the community and as well as on
01:07
legal boards
01:14
community involvement is one of the most
01:17
important things to me as an individual
01:19
and so it was only natural that i
01:22
brought that into
01:23
service as a lawyer one of my missions
01:26
when i came
01:27
into this firm as a law clerk was to get
01:30
people motivated and involved in
01:32
volunteerism
01:33
and i just have always had a connection
01:36
to any community that i’ve been a part
01:38
of
01:38
it’s kind of just something that i grew
01:41
up doing
01:42
i come from a military family and so i
01:45
think that
01:45
just being having your ear to the ground
01:49
to what’s going on in your community
01:51
makes it that much easier to actually
01:53
support
01:54
and provide services and fight for the
01:57
people in that community
01:59
so the more you know about them the more
02:00
you can help serve them
02:02
even as a family lawyer you know so
02:04
knowing what’s happening out there
02:05
you know the types of divorces and
02:07
family issues that people in your
02:09
community are involved in
02:10
um just gives you a little bit more
02:12
knowledge when you’re moving forward
02:13
with their case
02:14
perhaps it’s a specific religious
02:18
issue or um you know just a specific
02:21
cultural issue
02:22
if you don’t know what’s going on out
02:23
there it’s going to be very hard for you
02:25
to connect with your client and know
02:26
what’s going on
02:27
so i think that and just a general
02:30
principle
02:31
of giving back has been very important
02:33
and motivating for me
02:35
and i’ve kind of impressed that on the
02:36
firm and i lead
02:38
several efforts with the firm including
02:42
our yearly hopefully we can continue
02:44
with covid but yearly
02:46
visit to the houston food bank where we
02:49
you know volunteer for a day
02:51
spend time there giving back and we kind
02:54
of get other people
02:55
in the community not just our law firm
02:56
but our friends our family
02:58
people that we know involved in that as well
Houston, TC family law attorney Kristy M. Banda talks about her service to the community and why it’s so important to her work as a lawyer.
