so one piece of advice that I constantly
find myself giving my clients is to keep
in mind that one of you has made the
decision to end this marriage but the
other party needs to catch up there may
be emotional or baggage or just a time
period where you realize you are further
ahead in that processing than they are
or your spouse may be further ahead in
that processing than you are there’s
always one party that’s further ahead
and so sometimes what we really need to
do is to back up realize that there
might be a period of catch up to make
sure you’re both on the same emotional
plane and you can really be thinking
clearly for what makes sense in your
divorce what I do to guide my practice
working with a clients is ensuring that
my clients making informed decisions
what that means is gathering all the
relevant facts whether that’s through
interviews with my client interviews
with the posing party or gathering
underlying information like documents
equipping my client with what that
information is and then ensuring that
they’re making informed decisions I or a
judge will never really be in a position
to second guess what makes the most
sense for you the client and so instead
what I’m going to do is gather that
information equip you to make those
important
decisions

Portland, OR family law attorney Charles Weber talks about the philosophy of his practice and shares his most common piece of advice to clients. One piece of advice that he consistently offers to clients is to bear in mind that while one party has decided to end the marriage, the other may need time to catch up emotionally. This period might involve emotional baggage or a realization that one is ahead in the processing of the decision. It’s crucial to recognize this difference in emotional processing and, at times, take a step back to allow both parties to align emotionally. This ensures clarity in thinking about what makes sense in the context of the divorce.

In guiding his practice and working with clients, the focus is on enabling informed decision-making. This involves him gathering relevant facts through interviews with the client and the opposing party, as well as collecting pertinent documents. Equipping the client with this information is essential for them to make well-informed decisions. The goal is to empower the client to make choices that make the most sense for them, as neither he nor a judge can truly understand what is best for the client without their input. His role is to provide the necessary information and support for the client to make important decisions.
