yeah one of the cases that always stands

out in my mind is we represented the

family of a little 12 year old girl who

had gotten an infection

which let caused some heart damage and

then she needed a heart transplant

and she got that heart transplant at one

of the major urban hospitals here in

and interestingly enough the transplant

itself went well and she came through it

but then she was put in the pediatric

icu where she’s now under the care of

nurses

and the junior doctors and during the

next 12

18 24 hours her vitals were going

out of whack and i remember specifically

a marker of heart function cardiac

central venous pressure was slowly

rising and going through the roof and

nobody brought that to the doctor’s

attention

then we had a new nurse come on board

who gave a powerful narcotic

administration

on top of that and unfortunately the

poor child went into cardiac arrest and

and despite their efforts to revive her

she became

brain dead unfortunately and this was a

family whose healthy

otherwise healthy 12 year old daughter

bedridden couldn’t talk couldn’t speak

it was tragic

and through our work of prosecuting this

case we learned that these nurses

were not following the guidelines that

they had established post-surgery we
01:26
learned that they weren’t communicating

information to the doctors

and as a result of that we were able to

get a six million dollar settlement

on behalf of this family
