Well, Ted, although we probably were most famously known for opposing each other in Bush v. Gore, after that, we’d become close friends. We go on bike trips together. Our families are close. We’ve gone sailing together and gone to the Kentucky Derby together. We’re good friends, and so it was more natural for us to get together, I think, than most people would have thought because a lot of people think that because you are against somebody in a litigation, that means you don’t like them.
In fact, particularly in a case like Bush v. Gore where Ted was obviously a great lawyer but he was a person of enormous integrity, professionalism. You come to admire that person, so often you come out of a case close friends with the person that’s been on the other side. And a lot of people don’t understand that, so a lot of people were more surprised than I think they otherwise would have been by our getting together.
