The thing I always think of is the fact that people come to me because they’ve been accused of a crime. And many of them, in fact, have committed some kind of crime, perhaps not exactly what they’re charged with, but they are not that crime. They’re a human being and they’re not defined simply by the charge against them. And even people who are accused of crimes that society really labels as abhorrent, they’re still a human being and they still have, should be treated with the dignity of a human being even a human being who has erred or fallen short of society’s expectations.
