I consider myself to be a well-rounded individual. I think that’s important. I have a friend that calls me a Renaissance man, and I think that’s important to say not in a bragging sense because in order to be a good lawyer, as I’ve said already here, you have to understand where people come from. And I was on my way to being a history professor at the University of Wisconsin, and I still love reading about history. I travel. I’m a big Civil War, World War I, World War II individual. I traveled to battlefields with friends and college roommates. I have an art gallery. If you look around my office and at home, I love art. I do that online. And I love the left-brain, right-brain part of practicing law and not practicing law. I’m also an outdoorsman. I garden. I have a vegetable garden. I try to make my own salsa. I muskie fish. I love spending time with my kids, and I love doing stuff outdoors. I’ve really enjoyed coaching, and my kids are very varied in their activities. I like to do their activities.
And, once again, I’m saying this because the practice of law has allowed me to do some of this, helping people and allowing me to do the things that I like to do. And I hope that being a well-rounded person, being able to talk to clients about what their hobbies and what their existence is has made me a better person and a better lawyer.
