If you are unhappy with the court’s decision in your case, you can appeal. However, the important thing to remember is that an appeal is not a do-over. An appeal is typically where you challenge the district court’s final decision or a final order based on the errors that the judge made while deciding your case. They’re typically errors of application of law or facts do not support certain conclusions that the judge had made. Again, it’s not a do-over of your case.
The court of appeals simply reviews the district court’s decision for errors. Now, family law cases are a little bit different than typical appeals cases in that family law cases get referred to family mediation. That’s a fantastic program because any agreement that was reached is going to be much more satisfactory and much more to your liking than something that is ordered by a court.
