The legal question is how far can you expand the stop to the search? So if you are arrested, certainly you are going to have an inventory search of your vehicle, and they will likely look in the trunk. But just for a traffic stop itself, you have the opportunity to say no. Then the police officer has to make a determination if they wish to pursue a warrant to search your trunk under those circumstances.
