Probably the best think you can do as Doug Thompson taught me years ago, keep your mouth shut. Most people talk to law enforcement for the same reason because they think they’re going to get out of the soup, but it doesn’t work that way. They are professional interviewers they’re trying to get you in the soup. So I think the best thing is avail yourself of the Fifth Amendment.

Winona, MN Criminal Defense Attorney J.P. Plachecki gives advice to clients who may be charged with a crime. Guided by the teachings of Doug Thompson from years past, the individual understands the value of silence. Many individuals engage with law enforcement under the misconception that speaking will help them escape trouble. However, this approach rarely proves effective. Law enforcement officers are skilled interviewers whose goal is often to incriminate rather than exonerate. In this context, the most prudent course of action is to invoke the Fifth Amendment, recognizing that remaining silent is often the wisest choice.
