Let me put it this way. When you go in for a kidney operation, you don’t want your surgeon to cut you for the very first time. You want your surgeon to have enough experience so you’re gonna live. Well, the same is true for a lawyer. If you are trying your very first case, you shouldn’t do it alone. And you shouldn’t be handling any serious matters, unless you’ve got the experience necessary.
And so when I first started out, I never did anything alone. I always had another lawyer, much more senior than me, kind of watching over me to make sure that I wasn’t doing surgery without experience. And so in my case I’ve handled enough cases, you go to court, you know what the rules of evidence are, you know what the pitfalls are, and you can steer your client one way or another. And I’ve seen horror stories where people, criminal lawyers, will take the money and the case is essentially over. They don’t do anything on the case. And so it’s really important to handle it as though it were a family member or somebody of your own, and all the way through, and that you don’t miss any detail.
