So I’ve seen a lot of great appellate lawyers, including some of my competitors right now. But the one who really stands out, back when I was clerking, was Rex Lee, who at the time was a former Solicitor General. And what stands out was a combination of his conversational manner with the Court. They clearly trusted him. They viewed him as a peer. And he was there obviously as an advocate, but solving a problem with them. He was very much himself in his own folksy manner, without putting on airs. And I found that really effective.
