There are actually four different types of child support that are provided for in the statute. The first is basic support. Basic support is the static number that comes out of the child support calculator once we compare the gross incomes of both parties. The other three types of support – medical insurance support, daycare support, and those costs not covered by insurance, medical, dental, or otherwise – are divided according to what’s called the PICS. That PICS percentage is the percentage of income between you and your spouse, so that if your spouse makes twice as much as you do, your spouse has two-thirds of the income and you have one third of the income. That person would then be responsible for two-thirds of those other expenses and you would be responsible for a third of those expenses. The last type of child support sometimes people consider are extracurricular activities. While extracurricular activities are not provided for in the child support statute, it’s something that parents often will agree about because it makes up such a huge expense for so many families.
