Boy, a good example of a catastrophic injury case that I can provide is, I represented an African-American woman who went into a strip mall laser hair removal clinic for just a simple procedure to remove unwanted hair from her body. The company did not properly train its employees, and they used a laser that was completely inappropriate for dark skin. Because of the way that laser reacts to skin, it caused severe burns on her body. In fact, while she was being burned, she told the technician that she thought something was wrong, but the technician ignored her. She ended up with permanent scars the size of silver dollars from her neck all the way down to her bikini line.

I represented the mother of a young boy who was riding with one of his friends from school, and that boy’s father. A police officer pulled that father over or attempted to do so, and the father foolishly chose not to pull over. The police officer initiated a high-speed chase through a residential area for a non-dangerous crime, even though he already had identifiers that would lead to the arrest of that person at a later time. As the chase intensified, the driver of the truck made increasingly poor decisions and eventually flipped the truck over, killing everyone in it, including my client’s son, who was only 10 years old at the time.

Kansas City, MO personal injury attorney Jarrett Johnson talks about some memorable catastrophic injury cases he’s handled. He shares a notable example involving an African-American woman who visited a strip mall laser hair removal clinic for a routine procedure. The clinic’s inadequately trained staff used a laser unsuitable for dark skin. Due to the way this laser reacts with darker skin tones, it caused severe burns on her body. Despite expressing concerns during the procedure, the technician ignored her complaints. As a result, she was left with permanent, silver dollar-sized scars from her neck down to her bikini line.

Johnson also represented a mother whose young son was involved in a tragic incident. The boy was riding with a friend and the friend’s father when a police officer attempted to pull the father over. Instead of complying, the father chose to flee, initiating a high-speed chase through a residential area for a minor offense. Although the officer already had identifying information that could have led to an arrest later, he continued the pursuit. As the chase escalated, the driver made increasingly reckless decisions, ultimately flipping the truck. The crash killed everyone inside, including the client’s 10-year-old son.
