Well, basically, if you run a business, at any point in time, that thought is always in the back of your mind. You should start pretty much as soon as possible.
Some people do wait. They wait until they get closer to retirement before they start thinking about that. But we always say that you limit your options if you wait that long.
The process has to start as soon as the business is up and running. You always have to think about what happens if you are not there.
Some people have this planning already done in the way of having insurance to be able to provide liquidity to your beneficiaries if something happens to you. But at the same time, there are other, much, much more sophisticated planning techniques that should be used by business owners.
If you’re a business owner, you should talk to us, or you talk to whoever your advisor is. You need to set things in motion when things are good. If you wait too late, if you wait until you get ready to retire, it may be too late to utilize some of the options that are out there.
