Douglas Becker: We think that our law firm is different because of the depth of experience that we have. The firm was founded in 1988 and has been in practice continuously since then almost completely on family law. We have nine attorneys here now with a combined experience of 177 years of practicing family law, that gives us a lot of in-house expertise.
The other thing that distinguishes us is the amount of time that we’ve spent focusing on educating other attorneys, doing mediations and participating in the legislation about family law and helping to craft that as well, usually through committees. So between our involvement in those things and the depth of experience we have, we think we offer an unusual amount of experience and expertise in family law.
Amir John
Showrai: Our firm handles every kind of family law case that you can think of. This would include dissolution of marriage or divorce, paternity actions which is a custody dispute for unmarried parents, and once you get into a post-dissolution setting, further custody disputes that come up such as modification of parenting plans. We also deal with child support which is continually – it has the potential to continually adjust over time. As well as equity relationship cases; these are cases for people who are unmarried but otherwise live in a marital-like situation.
Franni Turean: I think when someone is looking to hire a family law attorney the most important aspect is communication. If every attorney you talk to has the knowledge, the body of knowledge that they need to address the specific issues in your case, it’s the ability to communicate with that attorney and also understand what they have to say that’s so important. This is a very personal area of law and as a client you need to be able to believe and trust your attorney, and if there is a problem with the communication that’s gonna be an issue.
Michael Louden: We charge by the hour. So every attorney here charges an hourly rate commensurate with that attorney’s experience. The total cost of a case will depend on how much work is involved. There are simple cases where people agree on how to resolve their issues without any litigation. There are cases which are extensively litigated and the more work that is required through litigation, the more expensive a case will be.
It’s hard to predict at the beginning of the case how much the case is going to cost because you don’t know what the result will be at the outset. That said, we do what we can to keep fees reasonable, keep fees within the client’s ability to afford them if we can.
